Tokyo Electric signs deal to buy more LNG from Qatargas
(Gulf Times; Dohar, Qatar; June 12) - Qatargas has entered into a long-term LNG sale and purchase agreement with Tokyo Electric Power Co. under which the Japanese firm will receive an average of 130 million cubic feet of natural a day beginning in August 2012. This first long-term agreement between Tepco and Qatargas was signed in Doha June 11 and adds to an existing, shorter-term supply deal.
Tokyo Electric is one of the original eight Japanese buyers to sign a multi-party contract with the Qatargas 1 venture. Qatargas first began delivering LNG to Japan in 1997 with the start-up of Qatargas 1. Between the new and existing agreements, Qatargas will supply an average 260 million cubic feet of gas a day to Tepco starting in fall 2012 - equal to almost 10 percent of the utility's average daily consumption last month.
